Household Tank Water Treatment
Rain water collection and storage is typical in many rural households with delivery to usage via a pressure pump. The quality of water in terms of mineral/chemical content is naturally good, however there is always potential for biological contamination.
Faecal matter due to birds, opossum etc. on exposed roofs and guttering is likely to contain pathogenic organisms. If tested, this water would be reported as containing ‘faecal coliforms’ which is totally unacceptable for a domestic supply.
The most efficient method for treating this is filtration followed by Ultra-violet disinfection.
How Does Ultraviolet Disinfection (UV) Work?
UV water disinfection is a natural, environmentally friendly process which does not add any chemicals into your water, nor alter the water chemistry. Ultraviolet light energy inactivates harmful microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses, effectively preventing them from causing illness. The pathogens are destroyed in the time water passes through the disinfection chamber.
This is a probable combination of treatment equipment for a typical 3 or 4 bedroom country home.
There are both smaller and larger filters and UV systems which may be appropriate depending on the circumstances.
Ultraviolet Equipment for various applications
Greenway UV Systems are designed with compact, high-grade stainless steel chambers which house efficient, colour coded UV lamps. Separate electronic controllers (ballasts) power the UV lamps and effectively control the system diagnostics.
The single ended lamp design promotes user-friendly, easy lamp changes and simple periodic quartz sleeve cleaning.
Features:
- 99.99% destruction of bacteria (such as Ecoli), viruses and protozoan cysts (Cryptosporidium and Giardia lamblia)
- No chemicals added to water and no water chemistry changes
- Lamp failure alarm and lamp replacement reminder with 7 segment LED countdown display
- Low maintenance and easy servicing
- Hard glass, long life UV lamp for consistent maximum UV output over entire lamp life
- Range of sizes to meet flow rate requirements
- Electronic controller with universal AC input, constant lamp current and low power consumption

Cartridges
Granular Activated Carbon cartridge
Granulated activated carbon (GAC) has long been utilised to reduce unwanted taste, odour, chlorine, volatile chemicals and pesticides in potable water with a post filter minimizing suspended particles and sediment. Maximum absorption of impurities is achieved through granular media, making it most suitable for drinking water, food service, whole house filtration and many other situations.
Carbon Block cartridge
Carbon Block cartridges effectively remove particles as small as 0.5micron in size and reduces cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia in residential and commercial drinking water. Enhanced dirt-holding capacity and premium high capacity bad taste and odour and chlorine taste and odour reduction.
Omnipure In line cartridge
The Omnipure combines activated carbon with polyphosphate, resulting in the reduction of contaminants that can cause taste and odour in water, as well as the reduction or elimination of lime scale that is associated with “hard water”.
Chlorine, taste and odour is removed from contained water filters in mains or tank water supplies. Cartridge filters are commonly installed on ice makers, refrigerators, coffee machines, beverage equipment, drinking fountains, under the counter systems and Reverse Osmosis.
Poly Pleated cartridge
Pleated cartridges are used where large surface area filtration is required, making it ideal pre-filtration in high sediment applications. Suitable for sediment, scale and rust removal with the advantage of lower overall operating costs, longer filter runs with fewer change outs, reduced maintenance down time and cost. Pleated cartridges are washable and re-usable in most applications and micron sizes.
Poly Spun cartridge
The Polyspun range are cost efficient sediment pre-filters for a variety of residential and industrial applications. Designed for purity and chemical compatibility, they are highly effective for sediment, rust, sand and algae removal. The polypropylene construction provides superior chemical resistance and is not prone to bacterial attack.
Screen Filter cartridge
Washable Screen Filters are used for filtration and removal of sediments, sand and solid suspended particles. With a course filtration rating they are typically ideal for the pre‑filtration stage in domestic and industrial water softeners, irrigation systems and agricultural pumps protection. These cartridges are not recommended as a final filter for drinking water.
String Wound cartridge
The cartridge is basically a poly string wound around a central core which is then bonded together. Used purely for sediment removal, enabling high flow rates, this is an economical solution to reduce fine sediment including rust, sand and scale particles and suitable for a wide range of sediment applications including municipal and well water. As chemical resistant, they can be used with many industrial fluids.
Speciality
Polypropylene Sediment Filter Cartridge is made with thermally bonded pleated polypropylene micro-fibres which offers high efficiency, durability and strength. It features comprehensive filtration of sediment, dirt, sand, silt, rust, lime scale and other particulates down to the very fine 1 micron level. Its design offers a consistent flow rate, minimal fibre release, and superior chemical resistance. They are single use cartridges that should be replaced every 12 months.
Non-Cellulose Carbon Impregnated Pleated Cartridge
Offering sediment filtration, taste, odour and chlorine taste and odour removal in light duty applications. Pleats provide additional surface area for high dirt loading capacity, while maintaining minimal pressure drop. This combination of a pleated polyester media and carbon filtration produces an outstanding filter cartridge with extended service life. An inexpensive alternative for chlorinated water supplies.
